Drowsy®  Corporate Social Responsibility

CSR is at the forefront of our conduct as a company operating in 2023. We strive to ensure the best ethical and sustainable practices throughout all of our own procedures and make sure that any suppliers, manufacturers or partners that we work with adhere to the same level of social responsibility. We are proud to be completely transparent about every step of our production process.

There hasn’t been a more important time in history to protect our planet. This isn’t a choice, it's a responsibility. Making sure that our environmental impact is at the center of every Drowsy decision, allows us to sleep peacefully at night.

We also want all of our employees, customers and any communities that we have working relationships with to be treated fairly with respect and importance.

HOW WE WORK & OUR COMMITMENTS:

Legality & Business Ethics

We make sure that we are conducting our business in a modern and responsible way by:

  • Respecting the law
  • Making sure that all operations are legitimate
  • Being 100% open and transparent with all of our partnerships & collaborations
  • Carrying out business with integrity and respecting human rights by doing safe and fair deals with our providers.
  • Respecting our customers and their rights.

The following information regarding our suppliers is accurate at the time of writing. There may be small changes in the supply chain to deal with extraordinary circumstances, but we endeavour to keep this information up to date.

MANUFACTURE AND ASSEMBLY OF OUR AROMATHERAPY PRODUCTS

All of our aromatherapy products are produced in the UK.  Our manufacturer  complies to recognised standards of good manufacturing practice (ISO 22716); all staff are fully trained, are thorough in the production process, and are contractually employed.

Packaging is reused wherever possible, including bubble wrap and plastic foam.

Anything that can’t be reused is recycled when possible.

All printing is greenprint approved. The energy supplier uses renewable energy sources and invests in renewable energy power.

Ingredients

All of the ingredients that go into our aromatherapy products have been COSMOS approved. Cosmos is the European standard for organic and natural products in cosmetics. This means YES to sustainably sourced organic ingredients, natural colours and fragrances from plants and flowers, transparent manufacturing processes, biodegradable ingredients, minimal packaging, maximum recycled content, and protection of wildlife and biodiversity. This means NO to animal testing, GM ingredients, controversial chemicals, parabens & phthalates, synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances. The alcohol used in all of our aromatherapy products is 100% organic.

Labels

Our label printers are based in Yorkshire (UK), and use FSC® recycled paper. Vegetable based inks are used wherever possible. They encourage minimal waste, through responsibly sourced paper and recycling where possible.

Glass bottles

These are produced in Europe using a variable proportion of recycled glass. The supplier for our bottles is ISO 14001 regulated. This means that they must consider all environmental issues relevant to its operations, such as air pollution, water and sewage issues, waste management, soil contamination, climate change mitigation and adaptation and resource use and efficiency.

They also comply to SEDEX - SMETA the globally recognised social audit procedure to assess responsible supply chain activities including labour rights, health and safety, the environment and business ethics.

Plastic atomisers and lids

The lids for our pillow sprays are currently manufactured in China. Our original European supplier discontinued them and we were unable to source them anywhere in Europe. We are currently looking for a new glass bottle and plastic atomiser alternative that are both compatible and manufactured in Europe. The atomiser and lid on our pillow sprays can be recycled, however, the components must be separated first. We urge you to do this.

Boxes.

All of our boxes are made in Yorkshire (UK) from 100% recycled cardboard. Plant-based inks are used on our boxes which are not harmful to humans or the environment.

Our boxes can be 100% recycled and are biodegradable. If not recycled by our consumers, these will decompose overtime when exposed to sunlight.

Insert Leaflet.

Our inserts are printed in Southampton (UK), on FSC and recycled papers from sustainable sources. The ink is vegetable based, and all waste products are recycled.

Single-Use Packaging.

We are proud to have eliminated single use plastics from our aromatherapy product packaging.

MANUFACTURE AND ASSEMBLY OF OUR SILK PRODUCTS

Our eye masks and other silk products are made by a local manufacturer on the edge of the picturesque Lake Tai, in a stunning corner of China renowned for its pagodas, stone bridges, and Unesco protected classical gardens. They are highly reputed in the world of silk craft. The silk is dyed on site. Independent checks have been carried out to ensure the highest standards of operations on the premises. A third-party safety and ethics organisation monitors and ensures the manufacturer adheres to the highest standards of working conditions and staffing for all employees.

The high cost of raw goods in our silk sleep mask is due to the sheer quantity of Mulberry silk necessary per product. We have also invested significantly in stitching and design technology. Each eye mask requires approximately 0.3 m2 of raw silk fabric. Were the raw materials and the assembly to be done in Europe or the USA, the manufacturing cost would be significantly higher and the price of our mask would need to increase. Our mission at Drowsy is to provide the best possible sleep experiences for our consumers, whilst providing the best possible value. In every possible step of our process we seek to manufacture as close to home as possible in order to minimise our footprint in the world and support local suppliers.

We want to maintain the unrivalled quality and competitive price of our silk eye masks for you, whilst continually working to improve our sustainability footprint across the board.

All of our silk products are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and REACH compliant.

All fabrics are tested for colour fastness & SGS.

Our manufacturer conforms to fair employment and conduct and has undergone BSCI independent social auditing with AMFORI®.

Vegan & Cruelty Free

We are aware that the silk we source to make our silk products is not considered as “cruelty free”. As part of our constant drive for improvement, this was something we wanted to explore and we worked closely with our manufacturers to develop and test ethically produced “peace” silk for our eye masks. Unfortunately, we found that we were unable to replicate the extremely soft sheen and finish of regular silk and decided that our focus as a brand is to deliver an unrivalled luxury experience to our customers above compromising on quality. All of our aromatherapy products and candles however, remain cruelty free and vegan.

TERTIARY PACKAGING

Tertiary packaging box. Our mailer boxes are made from 100% recycled paper and can be fully recycled.

Paper Shred Void filler - The dark blue Zig-Zag style shred that you may find in some mailer boxes that we send out is used to protect your order during transit. It is made from 80gsm, 80% recycled Kraft paper. It is 100% recyclable.

OUR FULFILMENT PARTNERS

We ship all Drowsy website orders from BigBlue in Madrid.

We are proud to partner with them as our third party logistics solution, and their ability to coordinate with their couriers to deliver Drowsy orders to our customers in such a speedy, reliable and consistent manner, never ceases to amaze us.

DROWSY STAFF

What good is a ship without a crew? And a happy one at that. We are all about creating a culture of “hell yes”. Are there any rules at Drowsy HQ? Not really. Bring your dog to work, dance around naked if it makes you feel better. Just please go to bed early!

We provide private healthcare for all our employees as standard and (if they want) pay for their gym membership too.

We do not discriminate against gender or race.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We only adhere to fair labour practices. We protect human rights.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AT DROWSY HQ

Energy consumption + carbon management

What? Finding alternative and low energy solutions to systems such as lighting and cutting down on energy consumption.

How? Installing LED and energy saving bulbs at the Drowsy HQ and educating our team on how to save energy on a day-to-day basis.

Reducing Waste

What? Minimising our waste output. How? Buying Wisely - reducing waste at the source. Purchasing products that can be reused. Recycling as much as possible. Educating our staff on how to recycle properly and effectively.

Pollution

Currently all our employees are lucky enough to be able to cycle and walk to work. Happy days! :)

Recycling & Printing

We recycle everything we possibly can. Anything that can’t be recycled gets disposed of responsibly.

We like to consider ourselves as a paperless business. We use the cloud to store all ‘paperwork’. However, sometimes having to print something is unavoidable. If we do have to print something, we use recycled paper where possible.

LEARNING

We LOVE feedback!! If there’s something you think we should be doing differently, creating, providing, producing or including in any of our products or services...we want to know!

We listen to our community - and we create products around their needs. We are constantly learning about sleep and sleep hygiene and thinking about how Drowsy can find solutions to sleep problems…. naturally!

With this info we are able to do what we do best: Research and development. Trying, testing, experimenting, and improving!!
